When it comes to applying to private or independent schools, many families find themselves asking the same question: Should my child take the ISEE or the SSAT?
At first glance, both tests seem similar — they’re admissions exams used by competitive schools and cover math, reading, and writing skills. But underneath the surface, they’re built very differently — and choosing the right one can make a big difference in your child’s performance and confidence.
As a tutor who has worked with dozens of students preparing for both tests, I’m going to break it all down in plain English.
What Are the ISEE and SSAT?
The ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam) is created by the ERB and is accepted by many independent and private schools, especially those on the East Coast.
The SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) is created by the SSATB and is used by boarding schools and other selective institutions across the U.S. and internationally.
Both exams are designed to assess academic readiness — but they test skills in very different ways.
Key Differences Between the ISEE and SSAT
1. Question Style & Wording
ISEE questions are generally more straightforward and less tricky in language.
SSAT questions often use complex wording, especially in the verbal section, and include analogies that can trip students up.
2. Vocabulary Emphasis
ISEE uses sentence completion to test vocab in context.
SSAT uses synonyms and analogies — making it much more vocabulary-heavy.
If your child has a strong reading background and loves word puzzles, they might enjoy the SSAT more. If they prefer logic and structure, the ISEE tends to feel more natural.
3. Math Content
The math levels are similar on both tests, but the ISEE tends to lean more heavily on algebra and quantitative reasoning, while the SSAT focuses a bit more on problem solving.
4. Guessing Penalty
ISEE: ❌ No penalty for wrong answers — guess freely.
SSAT: ✅ ¼ point penalty for every incorrect answer — so guessing strategy matters.
5. Test Frequency
ISEE: Can be taken once per testing season (fall, winter, spring/summer)
SSAT: Can be taken multiple times throughout the year
Which Test Fits Your Child Best?
Let’s keep it simple:
If your child is... | Consider: |
Strong in math, logical, hates tricks | ISEE |
Strong reader, advanced vocabulary, loves puzzles | SSAT |
Easily overwhelmed by test wording | ISEE |
Likes wordplay, confident test taker | SSAT |
The Best Strategy: Try Both Practice Tests
The best way to know which test is a better fit? Try a diagnostic or full-length practice test for each.
You’d be surprised how different students feel about each one. I’ve had kids score similarly on both — and others who clearly excel on one while struggling with the other.
